In the Spotlight

In the Spotlight - Tuesday 16th November, 2010
With only 5 more sleeps until our Christmas Market we thought we would share with you the winner of our best dressed stand award from our launch market. So this week In the Spotlight is Carolyn Kohler Collection.

Carolyn Kohler Collection make stunning wearable art. With a background in fashion and a passion for colour, texture and design it was a natural progression for Carolyn to create wearable art pieces. Mother nature, in particular flowers, provide a never ending source of inspiration for her designs.

Many years in the fashion industry taught Carolyn that women desire natural fibres against their skin. Sadly, recent years have seen a huge increase in the use of synthetic fabrics and she is happy to support the move back to natural fibres.

Carolyn’s designs are all original, handcrafted pieces that combine Australian merino with silk using traditional nuno felting techniques.

All embellishments used are also natural fibres and include mohair, alpaca, hemp and cotton as well as beading in timber, coconut and glass. Carolyn hand dyes all her fleece and silk making each piece completely unique. No two are the same.

The wraps come with brooches that can be worn in various ways to suit the occasion or the individual style of the wearer.

You will see Carolyn Kohler Collection again at our Christmas market this Sunday from 10am – 2pm. And if you are planning a visit to her stand make sure your print off her market day discount coupon from our website.

I have just returned from another visit to Canberra and the Old Bus Depot Markets. They really are a fabulous venue and I look forward to returning there on the 11th and 12th of December for a big weekend of pre Christmas selling!!
The weekend before that I shall be at the Handmade Market in Canberra on 4th December and the Kanberra Winery for another huge day (11am - 7pm) of fun and festivity.
In the meantime, the Central Coast Handmade Market is on Sunday 21st November at Erina High School so make sure you come along and join me! I will have lots of summer scarves and wraps for all those social occassions on our calendars at that time of year.

Handmade Craft Market In true democratic style we had a hung vote for our best dress stand awards. So we called in 3 independent voters to decide on the winner and we have come to a decision. Everyone's stands were amazing and I can't wait to see the market in November. But without further adieu the winner is.....................CarolynKohler Collection. Congratulations Carolyn. I'd also like to give honorable mentions to Where the Wild Things Grow and Quirky Kidswho were also favourites at our launch market.

Very exciting!!

This week's designer showcase window features a delicious collection of wearable fibre art pieces by Carolyn Kohler. Her collection of wraps and ponchettes are all 100% silk and wool created using traditional nuno felting techniques, in beautiful colours and forms inspired by nature, each of these pieces are truly unique to Shop Handmade...

"All embellishments used are natural fibres and I hand dye all my fleece and silk making each piece completely unique. No two are the same."

I must say it was very exciting to see this article on line about my creations in Canberra!
Especially when I saw my name on the window! If any of you happen to be in Canberra this week, make sure you pop in to have a look.
More scarves on today's agenda and just the perfect weather for felting. Only 6 weeks to go till the Central Coast handmade market so I best be getting busy!
Have a great day!

Hi to you all out there in cyber world!! Thank you for visiting my blog.

What a gorgeous day it was today!! Nice and cool with plenty of sunshine flooding into my studio ... just how I like it! My last couple of pieces have incorporated camel into the mix of merino and silk. I am loving the colour and texture of this combination.

By the studio door my orchid spikes are getting longer every day. Can't wait for them to bloom and provide weeks of colour and inspiration for my work. With markets coming up on the Central Coast and in Canberra I am busy, busy, busy working day and night creating wraps, scarves, vests and brooches.

Business is rolling along and I am loving the journey I find myself taking.

Happy felting!

"individual and unique designs in natural fibres!"

The magical amalgamation of natural fibres to create wearable designs began for me an inspiring journey into the world of fibre art.

With a background in fashion and a passion for colour, texture and design it was a natural progression for me to create wearable art pieces. Mother nature, in particular flowers, provide a never ending source of inspiration for my designs. Many years in the fashion industry taught me that women desire natural fibres against their skin. Sadly, recent years have seen a huge increase in the use of synthetic fabrics and I for one am happy to support the move back to natural fibres.

My designs are all original, handcrafted pieces that combine Australian merino with silk using traditional nuno felting techniques. All embellishments used are also natural fibres and include mohair, alpaca, hemp and cotton as well as beading in timber, coconut and glass. I hand dye all my fleece and silk making each piece completely unique. No two are the same.

The wraps come with brooches and can be worn in various ways to suit the occasion or the individual style of the wearer. My new ponchette designs can be worn as a garment or a scarf and all pieces are reversible.

To date my designs have been sold privately or through galleries and selected stores. My work is ever evolving as I seek new techniques and I look forward to adding new styles to my collection.

I endeavour to create pieces that are unique, beautiful and original. They are for those that appreciate art and choose to wear individual and unique designs in natural fibres.
